For the past two years or so I have dreamed of riding in the Tararuas, so after finally finding two other nutters keen to give it a go, we locked in some midweek time off and headed for the hills. After finishing the Old Ghost Road we had planned to ride to the start of the Heaphy, but heavy rain had caused slips and closed roads so we caught the shuttle back to Lyell to get the car. After making countless bags for riders going to ride the Old Ghost Road I thought I better go see what it was all about.
