Rata 25

The Rata 25 is an everyday roll-top backpack designed and made in Wellington, New Zealand. At 25L it sits in the sweet spot for day hikes, commuting, and travel - updated from the Rata 20 with more pocket volume, a better carry system, and a design brought in line with the Rata 40. Simple and functional, without unnecessary features or weight.

Fabric & construction

The Rata 25 is made to order in your choice of fabrics. EPX200 is the most common choice - it's tough, lightweight, and holds up well over time. The base is ballistic nylon, which is there for a reason - it takes a beating from being put down on rough ground repeatedly without wearing through.

Entry & access

The main compartment opens and closes with a roll-top closure. Along the front and back panels of the opening there's no-snag velcro - pressing this together before you roll stiffens up the top of the bag, which makes it easier to roll down cleanly and keeps everything held together once rolled. A side-release buckle on each side then clips together to lock it down. There's also a compression strap over the top - great for cinching the load down when you're not running the bag full or for keeping a lighter pack looking tidy.

Pockets

The front ultrastretch pocket is a big step up from the zipped pocket on the Rata 20. At roughly 3L it's big enough for a rain jacket, a puffy, or anything you want to grab without digging into the main compartment - and a bungee cord at the top keeps everything in place while you're on the move. The ultragrid side pockets are where things really get useful - they open and close one-handed, fit a 700ml bottle with ease, and are a genuine upgrade on the basic stretch pockets of the original. Grab your water, grab a snack, keep moving.

Compression & attachment

20mm side compression straps with ladderlock buckles let you tighten the load from the sides - useful for compressing a lighter load or strapping something to the outside of the bag. Inside there's a velcro panel on the back wall - handy for attaching optional accessory bags and keeping the inside of the pack organised.

Harness & fit

The S-shaped shoulder straps are padded with 8mm EVA foam and 3mm spacer mesh, which means they sit comfortably even when the pack is loaded. The back panel uses 10mm EVA foam for support and all-day comfort. An adjustable sternum strap is included - it can be moved up and down the shoulder straps to find the right position for your build, and removed when you don't want it.

Simple hip belt - Optional 25mm webbing hip belt with side-release buckle. Removable when not needed.

Laptop sleeve

The internal laptop sleeve sits raised off the base of the pack. This is intentional - if you put the bag down hard or drop it, your laptop isn't taking the impact directly. A practical detail that makes a real difference if you're using this as a commuter backpack or travel daypack day in, day out.

Water resistant construction

Although every detail on the Rata 25 has been designed to resist water entry, it is not seam sealed so water may seep in during prolonged rain. It does a good job of keeping your gear dry, but the roll-top design makes it simple to add a liner or dry bag if you want to be sure.

Contoured Shoulder Straps

The Rata 20 has laser cut shoulder straps that conform to your neck and under your arms. The 5mm EVA foam core and a 3mm spacer mesh mean the straps will sit comfortably even when the pack is loaded, and the laser cut panel holding the sternum strap provides a convenient space to attach accessories.

Stretchy Side Pockets

The side pockets are made from durable Ultra Mesh. They’re stretchy and sturdy enough to stash a bottle, banana or flask of coffee and they’re angled toward the wearer for easier access during use.

Zipped Front Pocket

The zipped front pocket gives you a separate secure space for keeping small items, and a rain flap provides an additional shield over the water resistant YKK zip.

Quick Stash Pocket

You can stash items behind the front pocket for quick access. This space is ideal to keep a few snacks separate from your gear, and it’s a handy place to stuff the wrappers when you’re done.

High Volume Main Compartment

The main compartment is the star of the show. It’s approximately 20L, which is enough space for your workday items, a day in the outdoors or, if you go ultralight and strap some gear to the exterior, an overnight trip to a hut or bivvy spot.

Roll Top Closure

The Rata 20 utilises roll top technology from our popular Hightop bumbag. Roll top bags are easy to use, great at keeping out the elements and, because they roll down onto the contents of the pack, they can secure a variety of loads. The unique hook and loop closure seals off the top, then you simply roll it down and secure it with the 25mm strap and aluminium hook buckle.

Lashing Attachment Points

Laser cut lashing points on the bottom and sides of the bag allow you to strap on bulky extras, a rain jacket or a dry bag if you’re going for a big adventure.

Removable Hip Strap

The hip strap can be attached for added stability when heading out on the trail or detached to give a sleek look for zipping around the city.

Adjustable Sternum Strap

We think a sternum strap is a must on a backpack, especially if you plan on doing any running with the Rata 20. This one can be placed in various positions up and down the shoulder straps to find the fit that’s right for you, and it’s removable when you don't want it.

EVA Padded Back Panel

10mm EVA foam is inserted into the back panel of the bag for maximum comfort. This can be removed to use as a cushion for a cup of tea in the outdoors, or to give you some extra padding when you sleep.

Internal Laptop Sleeve

A sleeve on the inside of the back panel allows you to store a laptop or other device separate from the other contents in the pack. The bottom of this pocket is raised off the bottom of the pack, minimising the risk of impact damage if the bag is dropped
